With Independence Day behind us, I have been thinking a lot about freedom. I wonder how many of us really understand the value of the freedoms we have. I'm sure our veterans understand the cost of our freedom, but do the rest of us really value it, or take it for granted? I was thinking about what types of people might understand it's value and our older generation of African Americans come to mind. I think they probably remember a time when freedom wasn't taken for granted.
I hear the "N" word being thrown around these days like it is nothing. Young people calling each other "nigga", "nikka", etc. They use the excuse that because there is no "r" pronounced at the end, it shouldn't be offensive. I think it is insulting no matter how you pronounce it or spell it. People have been beaten, hung, dragged behind vehicles, tarred and feathers and killed because of that word and the hate that is associated with it. I wonder if they call their grandmother that word? No matter what color you are, the use of this word in any form is offensive, insulting and inappropriate. I think that any Christian home that allows the use of the "N" word is seriously missing the love of Christ. I John 4:20 says, "If any man say, I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar: for he that loves not his brother, who he can see, how can he love God, whom is cannot see?" There are a lot of power in words, words can build or destroy.
I challenge you, if you feel like there is nothing wrong with using the "N" word, in any form, to pray about it for a week, and ask God to show you, or let you know in your heart, if this word shows others the love of God, or if it promotes hate, anger, and humiliation.
I know this is a sensitive topic, but please leave your comments below.
